The short version
One thick woolen suit is the wrong answer in both cities. Two thin layers, cotton against the skin, with the outer one easy to take off, worked in Bengaluru and in Delhi. The difference is how many hours a day the outer layer stays on.
you've been gifted a padded winter suit and you're not sure a Bengaluru December needs it.
your winters are long and cold all day; this is about a cold window, not a cold season.
The story
The first winter, somebody gifted us a padded one-piece suit. He wore it once, on a December morning when the balcony thermometer said 14. By ten he was red-faced and damp at the neck, and by eleven it was 24 outside and the suit was on the floor. That was the whole lesson. Bengaluru's December nights average about 16°C and the afternoons about 27, so the cold is a window, not a day. What he needs at 6am he does not need at noon.
So we went to two layers. Against the skin, a full-sleeve cotton vest and pajama set, the plain interlock kind. Over it, a cotton full-sleeve t-shirt or a thin zip hoodie. On a Bengaluru school morning the hoodie comes off in the car. On the Delhi trip, when he was eighteen months old and the day stayed around 7 to 12°C, the same two layers stayed on all day and a third went over the top outdoors: a fleece, and a cap. Nothing heavy, nothing he could not move his arms in.
The rule I use: one more layer than I am wearing, and the check is the back of the neck. Warm and dry, leave him. Damp, take one off. Cold hands mean nothing; his are always cold.
The base layer, and the rash. The first winter we used a cotton-modal "thermal" set and he came up in a fine red rash along the waistband and the inner seams by day three. I cannot say the fabric caused it; it cleared when we went back to plain cotton and never came back, which was enough for me. Since then I read the label, not the product name. "Thermal" on the packet tells you the weave, not the fiber.
What we own and what the labels say:
| Item | Fiber on the label | How we use it |
|---|---|---|
| Babyoye 100% cotton interlock full-sleeve pajama sets | 100% cotton | The base layer, both cities. Inexpensive, so we have four and rotate |
| Babyoye cotton-modal thermal inner set | Cotton-modal blend | Softer and warmer than interlock. The one he reacted to; we stopped. Your child may not |
| Babyhug cotton full-sleeve thermal set | Listed as cotton; check the inside label | The option I'd try if interlock were not warm enough |
| Bodycare cotton knit thermal inner set | Listed as cotton knit; check the inside label | Same |
What to look for. 100% cotton or cotton interlock on the inner label, not just in the product name; flat seams; a soft waistband, because the elastic edge was where his rash started; full sleeves with a round neck, because a turtleneck went on and came off within a minute. Wash before the first wear. Size up one, so the base layer sits loose and the outer layer slides over it.
The verdict. Cubworthy, for the two-layer habit and the plain cotton interlock sets under it. Not a verdict on any thermal fabric; it is a verdict on reading the label. Your home, your child and your day may be different.
Bengaluru's December and January mean minimums are about 16°C with afternoons near 27 (IMD normals). Delhi's January is roughly 7°C at night and 20 by day, and often colder. The NHS and the AAP both say to dress a child in layers that can be removed, and to check for overheating by feeling the chest or back of the neck rather than the hands. Cotton against the skin is the standard dermatology advice for irritable skin; modal is a plant-based fiber most children tolerate. What matters is the individual child, the seams and the dye.
Skin reactions have many causes. If a rash spreads, blisters or lasts past a few days, ask your pediatrician.
The verdicts
Plain 100% cotton interlock full-sleeve pajama sets (Babyoye or any)
The base layer in both cities. Four sets, rotated, one size up so the outer layer slides over.
A full-sleeve cotton tee or thin zip hoodie as the outer layer
On for the 6am school run, off in the car by eight. In Delhi it stayed on all day with a fleece over it outdoors.
Cotton-modal thermal inner set (Babyoye)
Softer and warmer than interlock, but the one he came up in a rash from. Cleared on plain cotton. Your child may be fine.
The padded one-piece winter suit
Worn once. Red-faced and damp at the neck by ten, 24 degrees outside by eleven, suit on the floor.
