cubworthy
Feeding, Month 7 to year 3. By the cub's mum, Bengaluru. Updated October 2026.

He threw the first snack. Then he threw the second.

Teething rusks, puffs, fruit, nuts: what we gave, what we never gave, and why grapes get quartered in our house.

The short version

Safe snacks by age: soft fruit, idli and chapati strips from 7 months; puffs, cheese and egg from 9; makhana, dhokla and peanut butter on toast after one. Quarter grapes, no whole nuts or popcorn until five, and always eating sitting up.

What happened

The first snack was a commercial teething rusk at seven months. He threw it. The second was a slice of banana. He threw that too, then picked it up off the floor and ate it, which I'm told is how it goes.

Snacks are where I got the most contradictory advice. Grandparents offered biscuits and sugar-coated saunf. Instagram offered sugar-free, gluten-free, joy-free puffs . The paediatrician offered one sentence I've never forgotten: "anything round, hard or slippery is a choking risk until four, so cut it or skip it."

So here's our real list, by age. Seven to nine months: mashed banana, steamed apple, soft idli pieces, a soft chapati strip to gum on while I sat next to him. Nine to twelve: puffs when travelling, soft cheese, well-cooked pasta, scrambled egg. One to two: dosa strips, dhokla, peanut butter on toast, soft fruit, makhana (the one "Indian superfood" that actually earned its place because it dissolves). Two to three: whatever we eat, cut small, plus the occasional biscuit because he has grandparents.

The never list is short and firm. Whole grapes, cherry tomatoes and berries get quartered. Whole nuts, popcorn, hard candy, and anything sausage-shaped don't come near him until five. And he eats sitting down. Not in the stroller, not in the car, not walking. That rule was the hardest and it's the one the choking data supports most.

He still throws things. Now he throws them at the dog.

The AAP's choking policy reports that food choking kills roughly one US child every five days and sends about 10,000 under-15s a year to emergency departments; children under four are at greatest risk. The foods most often involved are hot-dog-shaped foods, hard candy, nuts and seeds, whole grapes, raw carrot, apple chunks, popcorn and marshmallows. Round firm foods should be cut to no larger than half an inch and grapes quartered.

The CDC advises that children sit up to eat, never lying down, crawling or walking, and never eating in a car or stroller.

Every child is different and this is our list, not medical advice. Babies with allergies, reflux, prematurity or feeding difficulties need a paediatrician's plan. Always supervise eating, and learn infant choking first aid before starting solids; the Indian Red Cross and most hospitals run short courses.

The verdicts

Cubworthy, with a catch

Plain roasted makhana (fox nuts), unsalted

What we actually did: lightly crushed for him under one, whole only once he chewed well, always sitting down and watched. It softens when gummed, but it is still a small round food, so size and supervision matter.

Cubworthy

A small steel snack box with compartments

Three compartments, one each for fruit, something dry and something he'll actually eat. The bribe, the backup and the vegetable.

Cubworthy, with a catch

Commercial baby puffs (any brand)

Fine for travel and temples. At a pack they're expensive air. We bought them for trains only.

Did not work for us

Teething biscuits and rusks

The ones we tried were mostly sugar and refined flour, and the hard ones snapped into exactly the chunks the choking guidance warns about. We stopped offering them; I can't promise anything soothes teething.

Product details are as we used them; the version on sale now may differ. Check the exact model and the manufacturer's instructions.
