One cream for the whole house

The short version

We stopped buying a baby cream and a grown-up cream. One range, three thicknesses: the lotion for Bengaluru, the cream for dry weeks, the balm for Delhi and for cheeks that crack. Fragrance-free, and the same tube goes on all three of us.

The story

The cream aisle story on this site is about how we bought six tubs in a year. This is what ended it. In the Delhi December, at eighteen months, his cheeks went from pink to rough to two red patches in four days of dry indoor heat. The baby lotion we had carried from Bengaluru did nothing you could feel an hour later. My mother handed me her own tube of Bioderma Atoderm, which she uses on her hands, and that worked, on him and on my cracked knuckles. We have bought nothing else since.

The ladder. The Atoderm range is one family, sold in three thicknesses, and the thickness is the only decision:

ProductTextureWhen we use it
Atoderm lotion (the pump)Light, absorbs in a minuteBengaluru, October to February, after the evening bath. The whole-house default
Atoderm Crème UltraMedium, a creamA dry week in Bengaluru, or when the AC runs at night
Atoderm Intensive BaumeThick, a balmDelhi, hills, and the cheeks and shins when they go rough. Also my knuckles

The label on the baume says it suits infants, children and adults, excluding premature babies, and the pack suggests three pumps for a baby, six for a child, nine for an adult. That last line is the most useful thing on any cream packet I have read: it told me I had been using a fingertip where he needed a palm.

What we actually do. Cream within three minutes of the bath, on damp skin, every day it is dry, not only when a patch appears. Cheeks and the backs of hands before going out on a cold morning. Nothing with fragrance, nothing with a picture of a baby on it, because the picture is the price and the fragrance is the itch. We patch-tested on the inside of his forearm for two days before the first full use.

The catch I will own. It is not cheap and it is not sold everywhere; pharmacies have it, supermarkets usually don't. And "one cream for everybody" assumes nobody in the house has a diagnosed skin condition. If somebody does, their dermatologist decides, not this page.

The verdict. Cubworthy. One range, three thicknesses, the same tube for three people, and I have not bought a baby-labeled cream in eighteen months. Your home, your child and your day may be different.

The NHS and the American Academy of Dermatology both say the same three things about dry winter skin in children: moisturize within minutes of a bath, use a fragrance-free product, and prefer a thicker cream or ointment to a lotion when skin is actually dry. Bioderma's own labeling lists Atoderm as suitable from infancy except premature babies, and as fragrance-free and paraben-free.

Dry patches that weep, crack, spread or itch at night can be eczema. Ask your pediatrician before treating them with any cream, including this one.
